Depression in Pregnancy – How Dangerous Is It?

It is hard to face a treatment for depression in pregnancy. There is a risk when the pregnant woman takes antidepressant medications during pregnancy. However, with the combined attempts of the doctors and the psychiatrists, they can cure it.

In first few days of being pregnant, the woman is expected to be very emotional and sentimental. 20% of pregnant women need to be treated with antidepressant treatments every year. The actual ratio is bigger than that, because they are taken softly and are neglected. Pregnant women tend to be more depressed with safety measures and cautious subjective views.

Antidepressants will harm the baby. And also, the depression may harm the baby. And so, the decision will be based on the severity of the illness and the decision of the patient’s caretaker.

Depression in pregnancy may cause problems to the baby. Those problems may include slowness in activities, irritability and less attentiveness. One may also be affected with short gestation period. It can also cause serious problems, such as weight reduction, cardiac defects and pulmonary hypertension.

It is hard to identify depression in pregnancy. Pregnant women, in general, are emotional, hyper and homesick. They can be upset with some physical changes and over attention. They also tend to have mood swings often and low energy

The symptoms of depression may be if the pregnant woman is upset all the time. Also, if she is taking drugs an alcohol and having low energy, then she must be depressed.

Psychotherapy sessions can sure depression in primary levels only. Medications can also be taken along with the sessions. In this case, the doctors and therapists must ask permission first from the caretaker. 

For women with very minute clinical depression, they can be pregnant if they choose to. But if you are planning to have, you need to stop taking antidepressants at least 6 months before you plan to have a baby. This should be done with the help of the doctors. In severe cases, taking the risk for the baby and the mother has no point at all.

There are cases where severe patients can have children. But, that is too risky. These patients must be cured with psychotherapies, meditations and consultations.

If a woman is experiencing depression in pregnancy, it is best that she stops taking medication, especially if she is mildly depressed only. Through that, you won’t be risking the health of your baby and your health as well.
