A glance at Post Partum Psychosis; A serious mental condition

Post partum Psychosis is also known as Puerperal Psychosis is a mental disorder which can occur after childbirth, anytime during the first trimester. It is when mothers can’t distinguish fantasy from reality. This disorder is more common to first time mothers. Most of the patients are aware they are experiencing abnormalities but only few care to consult health care providers.

Patients may or may not experience symptoms such as overexcitement, they also tend to talk too much which it doesn’t normally do, they also see and hear things which normal persons can’t see and hear. Lack of focus, word salad or they jumble words which are not related, they also tend to be violent at times due to extreme mood swings, they also feel confused at times, and may experience delusion of grandeur.

Possible mothers at risk are those who have a history of psychological disorders, particularly, psychosis, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. Mothers who experienced Post Partum Psychosis after their first pregnancy have the greater chance of having the same disorder with their future pregnancies./

Depression in Pregnancy – How Dangerous Is It?

It is hard to face a treatment for depression in pregnancy. There is a risk when the pregnant woman takes antidepressant medications during pregnancy. However, with the combined attempts of the doctors and the psychiatrists, they can cure it.

In first few days of being pregnant, the woman is expected to be very emotional and sentimental. 20% of pregnant women need to be treated with antidepressant treatments every year. The actual ratio is bigger than that, because they are taken softly and are neglected. Pregnant women tend to be more depressed with safety measures and cautious subjective views.

Antidepressants will harm the baby. And also, the depression may harm the baby. And so, the decision will be based on the severity of the illness and the decision of the patient’s caretaker.

Depression in pregnancy may cause problems to the baby. Those problems may include slowness in activities, irritability and less attentiveness. One may also be affected with short gestation period. It can also cause serious problems, such as weight reduction, cardiac defects and pulmonary hypertension.

It is hard to identify depression in pregnancy. Pregnant women, in general, are emotional, hyper and homesick. They can be upset with some physical changes and over attention. They also tend to have mood swings often and low energy

Is It Normal To Feel The Depression During Pregnancy?

Having depression during pregnancy can really happen to one out of five pregnant women in the world. If you have taken then pregnancy test and finally confirmed that you are expecting a baby soon, and yet you are not very ecstatic about that great news despite that everyone who also knew about it is very happy for you, you just can’t help but feel the otherwise.

  2. You are likely to have high blood pressure during pregnancy which is often termed as eclampsia.
